El Padrecito Ministries, Inc. takes a proactive approach in combatting gang violence in the United States through a number of creative ways:
Website: Using the popular HOMIES as the backdrop, and in particular the character “El Padrecito” (the Little Priest), the website ministry has provided online guidance to roughly 19,000 youth since its’ inception in 2000. Father Masseo Gonzales, a real catholic priest and blood brother to HOMIES artist David Gonzales, is the voice and personality behind “El Padrecito”. The majority of youth who visit the website, of which about 500 visit daily, are between the ages of thirteen and twenty-one. They also tend to be female, and are of Latino descent, and visit primarily from the states of California, Texas, Illinois, New York and Colorado. The attractive element of the website is that the kids can write in an anonymous format, and get direct guidance from a real catholic priest.
Books: We have also reached out to youth between the ages of seven and thirteen through a series of books. The character of “El Padrecito” has eatured in two of MiJOS childrens’ book series, “Spooky’s Nightmare” and the “Fiesta Face-Off”. The MiJOS series of childrens’ books, also by David Gonzales, are published by Scholastic, Inc. but published by Scholastic, Inc.
Rap Music:As a way of even being more creative in reaching the youth, we began a rap ministry in 2006, with Father Masseo Gonzales, or the “Rappin’ Padre”, leading the way. With funding coming through foundations and private donors, we have produced three anti-violence rap videos (all of which can be seeing at www.rappingpadre.org), incorporating youth from both California and Northern Nevada. We have also produced five original songs, and have performed live in a number of secular and religious venues.
Childrens' Movies: El Padrecito Ministries, Inc. is currently producing a pilot of a series of animated and live action shows, with the MiJOS being animated and Father Masseo Gonzales doing the live action. The show will be similar to morality plays not unlike the popular “Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids” show of the seventies. (See www.MiJOSmovie.com)
A long term vision is to eventually build our central offices in Guadalupe, California, where we also hope to construct a youth performing arts center. All of our work is guided by the Blessed Virgin Mary.
